Yahho!!! Welcome to my pear facts page, where I've put together some really fun pear facts that I found on the World Wide Web! I was really inspired by Prints' super duper cute
Berry Fun Facts About Strawberries page and wanted my own! I know it doesn't compare to
my onii-san lolwut's website but I tried my best so I hope you have a lot of fun here! o.o;;;
Koshka helped me a lot with writing this because I don't really get a lot of the big words I saw when looking for more pear facts. (✿◠‿◠)
- The Chinese term for "green pear" is 绿梨, or lǜlí. This is super kawaii and I love how it's almost the same as the first half of my name!!!!!!!!!!!! (づ。◕‿‿◕。)
- Pears are a really good source of nutrition, providing large amounts of fiber, vitamin C, and lulz!
- Pears have been grown by humans for thousands of years. The first historical reference to pears is from the famous Ancient Greek poem The Odyssey by Homer, where the fruits are referred to as "gifts of the gods". This poem was written in 8th century B.C., almost 3,000 years ago!
- There are over 3,000 varieties of pear grown across the world, wherever there is enough sunlight and a warm enough climate for them to thrive.
- Unlike other fruits, pears have to be picked by hand as opposed to automated agricultural devices. This is because they are very sensitive and easily bruised.
- The heaviest pear in the world, aside from ones of the Laughing Pear variety, was grown in Japan. The pear weighted 2.948 kilograms (5.47 pounds) and was recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records on 11 November 2011.
- Although commonly dismissed as mere inanimate fruit, some pears have found gainful employment as Internet historians and cultural preservationists, and fearless leaders of video streaming sites.
- Pear trees are part of the Rose family, which includes apples, strawberries, almonds, and coolest of all... roses! (✿ ♥‿♥)
- The overwhelming bulk of all pears are grown in China. In fact, statistics say that 16.5 billion tonnes of pears were grown in China in 2020/2021, compared to just 2.38 billion in Europe and 608 million in America! Wow! o.o;
- Pears have historically been a symbol for everything from immortality to the female form. In China and Japan, pears are brought to altars and family shrines due to their association with immortality, which came from the longevity of pear trees (up to 75 years). These days the pear has also become a symbol of zany Internet culture after a painting of a laughing pear was appropriated by 4chan to create the LOLWUT? meme.
- They say that a riper a pear is, the sweeter it is, because ripening lets sugars develop to be sweeter. This sounds fake to me... >ಠ_ಠ<
- The majestic Laughing Pear, which once proliferated on the Internet, is now in danger of extinction due to the destruction of its natural habitats following the introduction of the gross invasive species known as the NORP or the normalfag. Shortages of the Laughing Pear have devastated online communities who depend on a healthy diet of lulz for survival.
